Mike Tyson is being sued over allegedly using an unauthorized song to promote his Jake Paul fight last year in an Instagram video. The producer behind Jay-Z, DMX, and Ja Rule’s 1998 track “Murdergram” claims the boxing legend used the song without his permission.
The video has since been deleted by the Grammy-nominated producer Tyrone Fyffe , who is known as Sugarless, claims that the song aided in misleading fans that he was associated with the event.
“Neither plaintiff nor any of his representatives granted defendant Tyson permission to use the song title ‘Murdergram’ to promote his boxing match with Jake Paul,” the lawsuit reads per Billboard. “By listing the song title ‘Murdergram’ on his Instagram post, defendant Tyson misled viewers to believe that plaintiff endorsed, or was affiliated or associated with, him and/or his participation in the match.”
The producer also claims that the song helped the fight set Netflix records. The Tyson and Paul fight is the most-streamed boxing event with 65 million concurrent streams, according to Netflix.
“Defendant Tyson’s conduct was intentional, willful and with full knowledge of plaintiff’s copyright in the song,” the lawsuit reads. “As a consequence of defendant Tyson’s infringement, plaintiff has suffered, and will continue to suffer, economic losses and damage to his copyright in the song.”
Tyson has yet to speak out about the lawsuit.
