Dak Prescott is the NFL’s highest paid quarterback but it’s his backup, Joe Milton, who has been stealing all the headlines.
The former Patriot has been a fan favorite at training camp with his mobility and big arm. A 75-yard touchdown throw to Jalen Brooks at a joint practice with the Rams this week was the latest highlight from the gunslinger.
But a thumb injury he suffered this week could’ve put his Cowboys’ debut in jeopardy. A recent update from ESPN’s Todd Archer confirmed that Dallas will have Milton under center for Saturday’s preseason opener against the Los Angeles Rams.
Dallas also has quarterback Will Grier set for significant reps in the upcoming contest. If Milton was hurt Grier would likely play most if not the entire game.
I was monitoring Joe Milton’s hand situation right when it happened appeared he jammed it a bit unclear if on a helmet etc but he was able to throw after etc https://t.co/On53m2wvNm pic.twitter.com/HNPlVhEy47

Milton, 25, served as Drake Maye’s backup in New England last season before being traded to the Cowboys. His signature game was a week 18 start against mostly backups in Buffalo where he threw for 241 yards, a touchdown, and rushed for another score.
It’s a performance that drew the eyes of the league and the Cowboys’ front office. Now Milton will have a chance to show more doubters he can compete in the NFL.
