The 2025 Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series forges ahead to Saratoga Race Course for the 2025 Whitney Stakes on Saturday. The $1 million Grade 1 serves as one of the most important races in the Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic division, and it has long been heralded as one of the premiere horse races of the summer.
The concept is simple for this 1 1/8-mile dirt race: “Win and You’re In.” The Whitney Stakes victor automatically qualifies for the $7 million Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic at Del Mar on Nov. 1. So it’s safe to say the stakes are high.
Past winners of the Whitney have gone on to enjoy successful careers, one of the reasons this race has carried so much accord in the horse racing world for nearly a century. This year’s field will be no different, with eight of the 10 horses combining for career winnings of nearly $28 million.
Notable past winners of yesteryear include Discover (1934, 1935 and 1936) and War Admiral (1938), and recent champs include Honor Code (2015), Knicks Go (2021) and Life is Good (2022). This year’s field will be highlighted by Sierra Leone, Fierceness, Mindframe and White Abarrio.
