Yu Darvish made history on Wednesday. Not only did the San Diego Padres win their fifth straight game and finish a three-game sweep of the New York Mets, but Darvish pitched brilliantly.

He went seven strong innings, allowing just two hits and no runs, while striking out seven and walking no batters. It was the first win of the season for the 38-year-old right-hander.

The history that was made was that he became the leader in wins combined between the NPB and Major League Baseball among Japanese-born players.

It was his 111th career win in Major League Baseball. He made his debut with the Texas Rangers back in 2012. Before that, he won 93 games in the NPB. During his time there, he was the league MVP twice and won the strikeout title three times.

Since coming to Major League Baseball, he has been to five All-Star games, was the 2020 NL Wins leader, and led the AL in strikeouts during the 2013 season.

On the season, he has now thrown just 23.2 innings. His first outing was July 7 against Arizona.

The Padres will remain at home for a series against the St. Louis Cardinals this weekend. Following that, San Diego heads to Arizona for three games before coming back home.
