The Miami Dolphins are a team that need to make sure they have a rock-solid backup quarterback situation.

Tua Tagovailoa, the unquestioned starter, has had injury problems in the past, including head injuries. That means that it’s hard to envision him starting all 17 games heading into the 2025 season.

And if Tua doesn’t start, Miami will have to turn to a backup in hopes of keeping pace in the AFC East.

The Dolphins’ QB depth chart behind Tagovailoa is new this season. They signed former No. 2 overall pick Zach Wilson to be the likely direct backup. They also drafted Quinn Ewers out of Texas in the seventh round.

Ewers especially has impressed Tagovailoa.

“I think Quinn has been balling,” Tagovailoa told reporters on Wednesday. “I think he’s been buying into what he’s been told in the quarterback room and then things that he’s taken from the meeting rooms… He’s been doing really well.”

Tagovailoa also threw in some positivity about Wilson.

“I think Zach has been doing pretty good as well, and they’ll continue to work,” Tagovailoa said. “They’ll continue to get me better, I’ll continue to get those guys better, and continue to help that room grow.”

Tagovailoa’s only season in which he started every game was 2023. It showed on the field, as the Dolphins went 11-6 and made the playoffs.

Wilson is quite the intriguing backup. He has all sorts of arm talent, but he never put together consistency with the Jets. Maybe in a new offense and uniform, he’ll end up with a chance to shine.

Ewers was expected to go earlier than the seventh round, so maybe his talent is actually better than perception, too.

Regardless, the Dolphins might need these guys, and so far, it sounds like they’re doing what they’re supposed to do to be ready.
