The Toronto Blue Jays have been one of the surprise stories in Major League Baseball this season, and as of July 29th, the team holds the best record in the American League.
Coming into the season, it felt like the Blue Jays were going to be the third or fourth-place team in the American League East, but with all the New York Yankees’ injuries and Baltimore Orioles’ struggles, the Blue Jays found their way to the top.
Usually, the Yankees or Boston Red Sox are on top of the A.L. East every season, so the Blue Jays better take advantage of being the best team in the division this season and make moves at the trade deadline.
One area Toronto needs to get better at is in the bullpen, and Matthew Sookram from Fansided thinks the Blue Jays should trade for St. Louis Cardinals closer Phil Maton.
“Another righty in the ‘pen is Maton, who will also be a free agent at the end of the season,” Sookram wrote. “The 32-year-old Maton is having one of the best seasons of his career, pitching to a 2.35 ERA with 40 games under his belt and 48 strikeouts in 38.1 innings pitched. He’s allowed just one home run all season.”

Maton is in the final year of a $2 million contract and would be a nice, solid rental for the Blue Jays.
Since Maton isn’t a closer, he won’t have to bring back a lot in a trade, which is a good thing for the Blue Jays.
