Terry McLaurin’s contract negotiations with the Washington Commanders just got a little weirder.
The star wide receiver had been holding out. He wasn’t at training camp.
But on Sunday morning, McLaurin showed up at the team facility, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. And even weirder — McLaurin showed up with an ankle injury.
Schefter reports that McLaurin will be placed on the active/physically unable to perform list.
It’s not yet clear whether McLaurin will “hold-in” when he’s off the PUP list, or if he will practice once he is healed. But he is no longer eligible to be fined by the Commanders now that he is back with the team.

McLaurin is seeking a new deal that he feels would be more in line with his abilities. Reports have indicated a target in the $130-132 million range, which would place McLaurin in the same ballpark as new contracts signed by Garrett Wilson with the Jets and DK Metcalf with the Steelers.
The Commanders’ likely concern in negotiations is that McLaurin is older than both those guys. He’s already 30.
McLaurin has been as consistent as they come since entering the league, despite having poor QB play until Jayden Daniels showed up last year. Many have suggested he deserves to get paid a premium for the positive way he has represented the franchise.
McLaurin also has enough skill to age gracefully, as well. And give the Commanders’ big goals this year, it makes more sense on paper to have a happy McLaurin in the fold.
But for now, the whole saga has taken a twist. McLaurin is some degree of injured, but he’s also back at the team facility. Stay tuned, because there is more to come.
