The Los Angeles Chargers have the remainder of training camp and four preseason games to prepare for the 2025 regular season. Obviously, the main objective during that time is to form the best 53-man roster possible.
One position that has been focused on in the media is the wide receiver spot. Do the Chargers have enough there? Even before the retirement of Mike Williams, the answer to that question was probably no.
Much can happen between now and Week 1, but the Chargers will have some big decisions to make in terms of who is catching the ball from Justin Herbert. While several outside options exist, such as acquiring a player via trade or bringing back Keenan Allen, one interesting in-house option joined the team as an undrafted free agent.
Luke Grimm, out of Kansas, is an option to take over as a depth piece who could develop into an option out of the slot. In 53 games for the Jayhawks, he caught 177 passes for 2,472 yards and 23 touchdowns. Brent Sobleski of Bleacher Report chose Grimm as the UDFA with the best chance to make the team.
“The Los Angeles’ Chargers’ search for quality wide receivers continues even after drafting Tre Harris and KeAndre Lambert-Smith.
Mike Williams’ retirement opened the door for anyone on the roster beyond Ladd McConkey and Quentin Johnston to claim a spot.
Some may look at Luke Grimm and view him as a redundancy with McConkey already on the roster. Truthfully, McConkey has been miscast for years. Even though he primarily played out of the slot last year, he’s more than just a slot receiver.
The same applies to Grimm. They can be interchangeable pieces with the speed and short-area quickness to win off the line of scrimmage no matter where they align.
To the last point, Grimm led the Kansas Jayhawks in receptions during two of the last three seasons, with a team-leading six touchdown grabs during all three”, wrote Sobleski.
Grimm brings an exciting option to the Chargers, but how good are his odds of making the team? As it stands, there are five guys who are likely close to locks to make the squad: Ladd McConkey, Tre Harris, Quentin Johnston, Derius Davis and KeAndre Lambert-Smith.
MORE: Keenan Allen is not the only former player the Chargers should bring back
If Grimm were to sneak onto the 53-man roster, it would come at the expense of Jalen Reagor, in my opinion. Reagor will be on the “good” side of most 53-man roster projections at this point in time, but that could quickly change.
While Reagor is a former first-round pick, he has never done anything of significance in the league and is really only as high on this depth chart as he is because of a lack of proven options. Grimm should be seen as a major threat to steal Reagor’s spot and become the sixth wide receiver on the team when the season kicks off.
