Now you know when SMU head coach Rhett Lashlee threw shade at the SEC, that it wouldn’t go unchallenged, especially from SEC host and college football analyst, Paul Finebaum.
Let’s just say Finebaum took offense to what Lashlee had to say about the conference he covers.
At the ACC Media Days, Lashlee called out the SEC for being top-heavy.
“You look at our league,” Lashlee said to the media, “I mean, there’s just not a lot of easy wins on the schedule, and there are other leagues that claim depth, but the SEC has had the same six schools win the championship since 1964. … That’s top-heavy to me. That’s not depth.”
Not to be outdone, Finebaum called out Lashlee for what he called “embarrassing” comments aimed at the SEC and then proceeded to drag the whole SMU football program on the ESPN show “Get Up.”
“If I understand correctly, he’s the head coach at SMU,” Finebaum said. “1987, do you know what happened at SMU? They shut the program down. While he’s making fun of the SEC for winning national championships all over the place, SMU is the most corrupt program in the history of college football. And Rhett Lashlee has the nerve to get up there and throw stones? By the way, he played at Arkansas. … That’s one of the most comical, embarrassing rants I have ever heard.”
Lashlee also coached at both Arkansas and Auburn. Knowing Lashlee’s history with the conference as a player and a coach, it probably wasn’t a smart idea to come for the SEC, especially when your first venture into the College Football Playoff was a disaster.
