The British Open is a difficult challenge for every golfer involved, but participants have a small respite with the tournament’s cut line.
Along with the PGA Championship, the British Open takes more golfers through the weekend compared to the Masters and the U.S. Open. With a large field of 156 players in the event, that cut line allows around half of the field to survive the first two rounds.
Through one day, some Open Championship contenders have separated themselves, while other big names struggled and will be fighting to stay in the tournament on Friday.

Many big names struggled on Thursday, including a few former British Open champions. Collin Morikawa won the event in 2021 and has made seven-straight major cuts, but his opening-round 75 was a disappointing start. If he misses the cut, it will be his third in the four Open Championships since his victory, while he’s only missed one cut in the other three majors combined.
Bryson DeChambeau continued his British Open struggles with another tough opening round. In five previous starts at the Open, DeChambeau has missed two cuts and finished top-30 just once, albeit a top-eight finish in 2023.
Tommy Fleetwood, Viktor Hovland and Ludvig Aberg are all European players who disappointed with their first round performance. Jordan Spieth had a solid end to his round but still sits a shot back of the cut line, while Brooks Koepka had a forgettable first day. Meanwhile, Patrick Reed had one of the worst days of the field, only to be outdone by DeChambeau.

British Open cut rules
At the British Open, the top 70 players (and ties) on the leaderboard make the cut and advance to the weekend. It is the largest cut rule of the majors, as the U.S. Open only takes the top 60 while the Masters takes just the top 50. The PGA Championship, meanwhile, also has a top-70 cut rule.
How many golfers make the cut at the British Open?
Players within the top 70 of the leaderboard will make the cut at the British Open. That includes ties, so there will likely be more than 70 players who make the cut depending on how many players are tied for the highest score above the cut line.
In 2019, which was the last time Royal Portrush hosted the British Open, the cut line ended up at +1 with 73 players making the cut. However, last year when Royal Troon hosted, the cut line as +6 with 80 players surviving.
