The Boston Red Sox made an uncommon international signing two years ago.
That’s when they signed Chansol Lee out of South Korea for $300,000. Lee chose not to start off in his native KBO and instead come to the Boston organization.
It didn’t work out. On Thursday, Lee was released by the Red Sox.
He only pitched two minor league games in 2024, at Rookie-ball, before a shoulder injury kept him out up until his release.

Lee is in a tough spot now, too.
“Korean-born players who forgo the Korean Baseball Organization draft in favor of signing with a Major League Baseball team have to wait two years after being released by their organization before they can return to the KBO,” writes SI’s Jackson Roberts.
The Red Sox won’t regret the $300K too much. It was a chance worth taking.
Hopefully Lee, who turns 20 next week, can find his way in the baseball world once his shoulder heals up.
