The anger from other fanbases began almost immediately when Julio Rodriguez was named an All Star. They felt the Seattle Mariners centerfielder didn’t deserve that honor.

That all happened before Rodriguez went on one of the most impressive hitting stretches in baseball history.

This weekend, Rodriguez wasn’t just an All Star. He was a superstar.

In a three-game series in Detroit, Rodriguez put up numbers only done twice before in baseball history: by Barry Bonds in 1987 and Mike Schmidt in 1975.

He had 17 total bases, four walks and two steals.

On Friday, Rodriguez started with a 1-for-4 day that included a homer, two runs, two RBI and a walk.

On Saturday, Rodriguez went 3-for-5 with another homer, a double, two RBI, three runs, a walk and a steal.

And on Sunday, Rodriguez was 2-for-3 with a double, a homer, three runs, two RBI, two walks and a steal.

It was quite the weekend.

Rodriguez won’t actually play in the All-Star Game. He’s taking a break to reset before the second half. Teammate and also red-hot hitter Randy Arozarena takes his place on the roster.

If Julio can keep this up in the second half, it’ll be exactly what the Mariners needed.
