Newcastle United’s summer rebuild is moving fast as the club looks to transform their squad before the new season kicks off.
Just days after completing a £55 million [$74m] deal for winger Anthony Elanga, they have now turned to find a centre-back who can strengthen the spine of the defense.
Manager Eddie Howe knows that Newcastle can’t wait around if they want to close the gap on the Premier League’s top four.
The club is well aware that Sven Botman’s injury issues and even though Dan Burn and Fabian Schar signed new contracts and played at a high level last season, both are in their thirties and the need for a younger long-term option is clear.
Newcastle United learn asking price for Giorgio Scalvini
Sources told The i Paper that Newcastle have made early moves for Italy international Giorgio Scalvini, who is valued at over £50 million [$67m] by Atalanta.
The 21-year-old defender, capped eight times by Italy, is also drawing interest from Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, and several Serie A clubs.

Scalvini is reportedly open to a Premier League move and intrigued by Newcastle’s project.
His international teammate, Sandro Tonali, has praised Eddie Howe and the club during national team duty.
Atalanta, who have built a Champions League-level squad through smart player trading, are trying to renew Scalvini’s contract, currently valid until 2028 but are open to negotiations at the right price.
