The Philadelphia Phillies had Kyle Schwarber and Zack Wheeler named to the All-Star Game. Wheeler dropped out of the game, but there were some other Phillies who had a case to make the game.
Most notably, many thought Trea Turner and Cristopher Sánchez should have been named to the game as replacements at least. On Friday night, Major League Baseball announced that Jacob Misiorowski of the Milwaukee Brewers would join the All-Star Game as a replacement after making just five career starts.
Schwarber and other Phillies players were not pleased with the league’s decision to leave Sánchez out of the game again, especially in favor of a player with much less time in the big leagues this year.
“It’s unfortunate,” Schwarber said, per The Athletic’s Matt Gelb, “but I wish my teammates were there. We know what we have, and I think that we’re grateful for what we have.”
Schwarber and Trea Turner believed that Sánchez should have been named an All-Star and then replaced, so that he could still be recognized. Sánchez is scheduled to pitch on Sunday, and the league reportedly told the Phillies that replacements would have to pitch in the game. Sánchez is essentially being punished because he is taking the ball for his team in a regular-season game.

“When they announce guys on the field, when it’s the throwback day or the 10-year reunion, it’s, ‘He was an X-time All-Star.'” Schwarber said, noting the impact being named an All-Star can have on a player’s legacy.
