The San Diego Padres are in the heat of the NL playoff race. At 50-43, they trail the Giants by just a half-game for the final spot in the wild card race. But a decision looms. The trade deadline is 20 days away and the Padres are looking to see what they can do to make a playoff push.
If San Diego does decide to buy at the trade deadline, one player they could get is an AL West slugger. In a Bleacher Report story from Tim Kelly, Kelly listed out 10 trades before the deadline that could strengthen teams contending for a postseason run. One of the trades he mentions is the Padres acquiring Texas Rangers’ hitter Adolis Garcia.
“Since the start of the 2024 season, Garcia has just a .673 OPS, but he’s two years removed from hitting 39 home runs,” Kelly said. “San Diego president of baseball operation A.J. Preller loves to make big moves, and if a change of scenery is able to reinvigorate the 32-year-old at the plate, this would be one of the biggest moves of the trade deadline.”
Though he has not had his best, Garcia has still played solidly. He has batted .231, but he has hit 11 home runs and brought in 53 runs this season. The Padres need an outfielder that is used to playing the position. Gavin Sheets, who is used to being the DH, has been manning left field duties this year.
