The San Antonio Spurs ensured they had depth at the point guard spot Wednesday.

ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that the Spurs and Jordan McLaughlin agreed to a one-year, $3 million deal to return to San Antonio.

McLaughlin played 18 games with the Spurs last season after he was traded by the Sacramento Kings alongside De’Aaron Fox to San Antonio. McLaughlin, 29, received just 6.8 minutes per game with the Spurs while averaging 2.5 points and 1.5 assists.

McLaughlin spent the first five seasons of his NBA career with the Minnesota Timberwolves. He had a promising rookie season when he tallied 7.6 points and 4.2 assists per game. McLaughlin became a regular in Minnesota’s rotation for the next several seasons, but he struggled to find playing time with the Kings and Spurs.

“I’m going to just go in there and provide energy and effort like I always do,” McLaughlin told reporters after being traded to the Spurs last season, per the San Antonio Express-News’ Tom Orsborn. “I’ve been in the league six years now, so I kind of know the schemes offensively and defensively and what teams are trying to do, so hopefully I get acclimated pretty quick here.”

It might be wise for the Spurs to use McLaughlin a little more frequently during the 2025-26 campaign and he could take some of the minutes that went to Chris Paul, who is a free agent, last season.

McLaughlin is an adept playmaker and could help space the floor for star center Victor Wembanyama as he’s a career 37.3% 3-point shooter, albeit on 1.6 attempts per game.
