Injuries are always a poisoned chalice in the NBA. Still, it’s hard to shake the feeling that the 2026-27 season has featured more maladies — both of the short-term and long-term variety — than many of its predecessors.

It only took a handful of games for the sky to start tumbling in Oklahoma City and Minnesota when injuries cut down standouts like Jalen Williams and Anthony Edwards. The whole NBA ecosystem is feeling the effects — from the Thunder and Magic to the Wizards and Jazz, it feels like no one can escape the scorn of the injury bug.

With that, here’s a look at how the recent spate of injuries to key contributors have impacted the title race in the bookies’ eyes.

NBA injury impact on title odds

Heading into the season, the bookmakers felt like there was a wide array of candidates who could compete for the title. The Spurs were deemed as favorites, with Victor Wembanyama and Co. expected to take strides after appearing in the Finals as one of the league’s youngest teams.

Furthermore, the Thunder’s continuity, 76ers‘ additions and Knicks, Celtics, Raptors and Timberwolves‘ relative might gave credence to the idea that anyone could compete for an NBA crown.

With that, here’s a look at how the title odds have shifted following the spate of injuries that have taken place thus far.

Thunder

Oklahoma City has been one of the biggest losers of the early-season slate, seeing two of the franchise’s most important talents — Williams and Cason Wallace — effectively ruled out for the rest of the season.

The Thunder still teem with talent — they have used their draft capital effectively in recent years, enlisting the likes of Ajay Mitchell and Jaylin Williams to help carry the load with Williams and Wallace out. First-rounders Aday Mara and Bennett Stirtz should also get some opportunities to contribute, meaning head coach Mark Daginault’s side isn’t quite without hope.

Nevertheless, Oklahoma City entered the campaign with even odds with the Spurs. Four games in, the marching order for the two Western Conference sides has been determined, with San Antonio holding opening up a gap in the title odds.

Raptors

Entering into the year, the viability of a Toronto run to the championship centered around one primary tool: defense. If the Raptors could defend, they’d give themselves as good a chance as any team to emerge out of the East.

So far, so good; Toronto is conceding the third-fewest points per game through three games, spearheaded by All-Defensive contenders Scottie Barnes and Collin Murray-Boyles.

The Raptors have fared well even amid Leonard’s early struggles. The seven-time All-Star was shooting just 32.4 percent from the field at the time of his injury. Leonard’s injury leaves a hole in Toronto’s wing position. But it’s not entirely gaping, with Murray-Boyles, Ja’Kobe Walter and Allen Graves all expected to share the responsibility of matching his production as a committee. With Leonard only rumored to be out weeks instead of months, the Raptors should be able to keep afloat. They’re worthy title contenders.

Timberwolves

Minnesota’s offense flourished in its opening four games. Edwards was central to that success; he saw his scoring average swell to 33.3 per night, aided no doubt by LaMelo Ball’s addition into Chris Finch’s offense.

Edwards is the Timberwolves’ most important player. His impending two-month absence due to an arthroscopic procedure will no doubt be an impediment on 3-1 Minnesota and its push for world domination. The Timberwolves’ odds haven’t quite come crashing down just yet. But a few losses will no doubt send the bookmakers into a fury.

Heat

Whereas injuries have struck some of the aforementioned teams early in the year, the Heat have just been plain bad. Winless in four games, Miami only has itself to blame for its early-year toils. Giannis Antetokounmpo remains at his spell-binding best, averaging 28.5 points, 9.5 rebounds and 5.0 assists. Besides him, Erik Spoelstra’s side is lacking in vigor. Bam Adebayo and Klay Thompson have been underwhelming, while Miami’s lackluster roster construction has made for an eyesore.

Antetokounmpo will undoubtedly stabilize things, pushing the Heat towards a record that is more in line with the amount of talent littered around its roster. Nevertheless, this does not look like a title-contender — a disposition reflected in Miami’s current standing in the title odds picture.
