The New York Giants are heading into Week 7 of the 2026 NFL season with a big question at the quarterback position. With Jaxson Dart out, Jameis Winston has been getting all of the work at QB for New York.
That was until last week, when J.J. McCarthy took over in what was meant to be garbage time, but he played at such a high level that now there’s a real question about whether he’s deserving of the starting job.
Well, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Giants are planning to make McCarthy the QB1 for Week 7 against the Houston Texans.
Giants reportedly plan to name J.J. McCarthy as Week 7 starting QB
“Source: The Giants plan to start J.J. McCarthy on Sunday vs. Houston,” Fowler reported Wednesday afternoon.
This is a huge decision for the Giants if this plan does stay in place and McCarthy is the Week 7 starting quarterback.
There was some speculation that the Giants might hold off on naming McCarthy the starter until after their Week 8 bye, with the Texans a very difficult matchup for any quarterback, let alone one making their first start with a new team.

But considering how well McCarthy played, albeit against a weak New Orleans Saints defense when the game was nearly out of reach, the Giants had real reason to turn to the former Minnesota Vikings QB as the Week 7 starter.
In a little over one full quarter, McCarrhy went 11 of 21 for 243 yards and one touchdown with one interception in a near-miraculous comeback effort from down 34-10. He was also the Giants’ leading rusher with 26 yards on the ground.
Now, after such an impressive showing in his Giants’ debut, the team is reportedly planning to name him the starter for New York in Week 7, and likely for the remainder of the regular season.
