The Atlanta Falcons took the field Sunday with more than football on their minds, delivering an emotional tribute to defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich and his late wife, Cristina Ulbrich, who died earlier this year following a lengthy battle with cancer.
Before Sunday’s matchup against the Chicago Bears at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Falcons players wore red warmup shirts featuring the message, “I Play for Cristina Ulbrich.”
The tribute served as a reminder that the relationships within an NFL organization extend far beyond wins, losses and what happens on the football field.
Cristina died in July at age 48 after battling cancer. She leaves behind Jeff and their three children, Samantha, Jax and Jace.
Following her passing, the Falcons released a statement honoring her impact on the organization.
“Cristina was a devoted wife, mother, and friend whose strength, grace, and resilience touched all who knew her,” the organization stated.
Falcons owner Arthur Blank also expressed his condolences, emphasizing Cristina’s importance to the organization.
“Cristina will always be an important part of our Falcons family,” Blank said.
Falcons continue supporting Jeff Ulbrich through difficult time
Ulbrich stepped away from the team during training camp to spend time with his family following Cristina’s passing.
His return brought emotional support from players who viewed their defensive coordinator as more than a football coach.
Falcons linebacker Divine Deablo previously described Ulbrich as a father figure and older brother, emphasizing the respect players have for their coach.
Sunday’s tribute demonstrated that the bond remains strong.
For Atlanta, the message represented something bigger than a Week 6 matchup against Chicago.
It was an opportunity to recognize Cristina’s courage, honor her memory and remind Ulbrich that his football family continues standing beside him.
While the Falcons entered Sunday looking for an important victory, the pregame tribute carried a deeper meaning.
Football brings players and coaches together, but moments like these demonstrate the compassion and unity that can develop within a locker room.
Regardless of Sunday’s outcome, the Falcons delivered a powerful message through their red shirts: Cristina Ulbrich’s memory remains part of the organization.
