The New York Jets may have found their next defensive superstar, and rookie pass rusher David Bailey delivered a performance Sunday that could change the direction of their season.

Bailey dominated the Cleveland Browns, recording three sacks, eight quarterback pressures and seven tackles as New York snapped a three-game losing streak with a 17-12 victory at rain-soaked MetLife Stadium.

The 23-year-old rookie, selected second overall in the 2026 NFL Draft, became the first Jets rookie since Hugh Douglas in 1995 to register three sacks in a single game.

“I’ve said all along that his time is going to come,” Jets head coach Aaron Glenn said.

Bailey’s breakout performance helped New York sack Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson eight times, matching the franchise’s highest single-game total over the past 40 seasons.

Despite criticism surrounding his relatively quiet start, Bailey remained focused on improving rather than responding to outside opinions.

“I’m not really on social media, so I can’t really speak on what was said,” Bailey explained.

His five sacks through five career games now place him among the NFL’s most productive recent rookies.

Jets Defense Delivers When It Matters Most

New York’s defense limited Cleveland to 198 total yards, showcasing a remarkable turnaround after struggling against Chicago.

However, the Jets nearly surrendered another heartbreaking defeat when Watson connected with rookie receiver Denzel Boston for a 29-yard touchdown, giving Cleveland a 12-10 fourth-quarter advantage.

A costly Browns special teams mistake changed everything.

A high snap sailed past punter Corey Bojorquez, allowing New York to recover possession deep in Cleveland territory.

Running back Braelon Allen capitalized with a 22-yard touchdown run, securing the lead with 3:01 remaining. Allen finished with 116 rushing yards.

Bailey and the Jets defense ultimately slammed the door on Cleveland’s comeback attempt.

Linebacker Demario Davis described the victory as potentially historic for an organization searching for renewed confidence.

For Bailey, Sunday’s performance represented more than impressive statistics. It established him as a rising defensive force capable of transforming New York’s future.
