As expected, the Arizona Cardinals cut ties with former Offensive Rookie of the Year and two-time Pro Bowl quarterback Kyler Murray following a rollercoaster seven-year stint with the franchise.
Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer didn’t waste much time delivering game-changing news regarding the Minnesota Vikings’ chances of landing Murray on the free agent market.
“Kyler Murray’s finally free—and all signs point to Minnesota,” Breer wrote. “The Vikings have done plenty of research into potential quarterback reclamation projects over the last couple months, to see if they can hit on one the way they hit on Sam Darnold two years ago. The one name that’s consistently come up is Murray’s.”
“And from a football standpoint, both because of the past work Kevin O’Connell’s done with guys like Darnold and Daniel Jones and the Vikings’ roster, this makes sense for Murray. But it’s not just a football fit. It’s a financial fit, too. Murray’s guaranteed $36.8 million for the 2026 season, and the Cardinals are responsible for all of it, minus what he gets from his new team.”
“That flexibility to go play for the $1.215 million veteran minimum allows for Murray to focus on the football part of it with the finances being a non-issue and allows for the Vikings to bring in high-upside, low-cost competition for J.J. McCarthy.”
With Murray being scheduled to visit with the Vikings on Thursday (today), it truly seems like the former No. 1 overall pick is destined to spend the next portion of his NFL career in Minnesota.
McCarthy will likely begin the 2026-27 season as the Vikings’ starting quarterback. Still, bringing in a young yet battle-tested signal caller who has shown he can be a jack-of-all-trades when firing on all cylinders would be a brilliant idea.
Murray has recorded 20,460 passing yards, 3,193 rushing yards, 153 total touchdowns, and 60 interceptions in the pros thus far. Without a doubt, the Vikings should feel confident about their ability to sign Murray sooner rather than later.
