The Houston Texans took a major step forward over the past two seasons, transforming from rebuilding franchise to legitimate playoff contender behind franchise quarterback C.J. Stroud. With the roster largely in place, the next phase for general manager Nick Caserio is clear: use free agency to patch a few key holes and push the team closer to Super Bowl contention.
Here are two positions Houston could prioritize once free agency opens.
1. Interior Offensive Line
Protecting Stroud remains the organization’s top priority. After trading both tackles Laremy Tunsil and Tytus Howard the last two offseasons, the Texans will look to beef up thier interior, as they have built solid replacements on the exterior already.
Adding a reliable veteran guard or center could stabilize the pocket and improve Houston’s ability to run between the tackles. The Texans have already invested heavily in Stroud’s development, and ensuring consistent interior protection is one of the simplest ways to keep their offense among the league’s most dangerous.
2. Defensive Line Pass Rush
The Texans’ defense made major strides under Ryans, but adding another disruptive pass rusher opposite Will Anderson Jr. could elevate the unit even further.
Houston generated pressure at key moments last season, but depth along the defensive front will be critical during a long playoff push. A proven veteran edge rusher or interior disruptor would help ensure Anderson continues to see favorable matchups.
With Stroud firmly established as the franchise quarterback, the Texans’ Super Bowl window may already be opening. A few smart additions in free agency could be all it takes for Houston to become one of the AFC’s most dangerous teams in 2026.
