Bill Belichick’s move to college football could be one of his shortest tenures as a head coach. At least one longtime writer believes that will be the case.

The Athletic’s Ralph Russo compiled who will be coaching every Power Four program in 2030. Not only will Belichick be long gone, he believes that will come after the 2026 season. Given how the first year went in Chapel Hill, this might not come as a shock to many. However, what will Big Bill’s future plan be? The NFL might be his best option.

As for Belichick’s possible replacement, Miami defensive coordinator Corey Hetherman is projected to take over. “Based on the assumption that North Carolina is going to be looking for a new coach by December, Hetherman should be a hot commodity among coordinators after transforming The U’s defense,” Russo wrote.

If this is the “swan song” for Belichick, what will the season look like for the future Hall-of-Famer? Nobody really knows at this point.

The Tar Heels suffered a string of bad losses and never quite recovered. In the end, the team finished 4-8, which was its worst record since 2018.

Belichick’s legendary NFL career will stand alone, but anything short of a winning season this year complicates his legacy. After nearly 50 years coaching professional football, why Belichick accepted a step down won’t be easy to explain and likely cost him being a first-ballot Pro Football Hall-of-Famer.

Belichick, who signed a five-year $50 million deal to join UNC last year, might not last past the terms of his contract. That’s the reality of the situation.
