How hard was it for the Edmonton Oilers to find a trade partner for Andrew Mangiapane?
Clearly, very difficult. Their decision on Sunday tells the story.
The Oilers have placed Mangiapane on waivers, with the move announced by the team.
They’ve also placed Alec Regula on waivers.
The NHL trade deadline is Friday, March 6, and the Oilers are getting out in front of it.
These moves will clear salary cap space, although not as much as if they would’ve found a way to trade Mangiapane.

The problem with Mangiapane is in part because he’s still got a whole additional season on his contract with a cap hit of $3.6 million per season.
Regula wasn’t necessarily an expected player to potentially depart with. The Oilers claimed him off waivers in December 2024 from the Bruins, and he had a contract extension that was slated to carry him through next season.
So instead of trading, they’re just tossing them on waivers. Makes sense. Gets them at least 1.7 in cap space I think https://t.co/A1KQRB5JIW

There are still likely more moves to come from the Oilers, maybe even sooner rather than later.
Once cap space is cleared, it could create the possibility for Edmonton to acquire a pricier veteran to make an impact as the Oilers try to chase the Stanley Cup.
For now, Mangiapane’s disappointing Edmonton tenure appears to be coming to an end.
