Michigan’s MHSAA boys hockey quarterfinals are under way across the state’s three divisions with the winners set to advance to next week’s semifinals.

That includes the nation’s top-ranked team in the latest MaxPreps rankings as the Howell Highlanders continue their postseason run against the nation’s No. 3 Detroit [Novi] Catholic Central Shamrocks Saturday afternoon. Howell entered the week with a record of 26-1-0 and defeated the Hartland Eagles, 6-3, Wednesday night in the regional finals.

Other top-ranked national squads in action from the Great Lakes State on Saturday including the No. 8 Houghton [MI] Gremlins, No. 10 St. Mary’s Prep [Orchard Lake] Eaglets, and No. 24 Northville Mustangs who compete in Division I with Howell and Detroit Catholic Central.

Houghton and St. Mary’s Prep are both pursuing the Division 3 championship while the top-ranked Division 2 squad remaining in the field is the No. 39 Powers Catholic [Flint] Chargers.

All of the quarterfinal matchups are scheduled to be played Saturday, February 28 with the semifinals slated to begin Thursday, March 5, and continuing through the next day. The championships for all three divisions are then scheduled for Saturday, March 7.

Michigan’s top teams headed into the MHSAA championships

DIVISION 1

Howell has been the dominant force in Michigan boys hockey this season, and the Highlanders have showed no sign of slowing down through their first two postseason contests. Prior to their win over Hartland, Howell crushed Davison, registering a double-digit output on offense in a 10-2 victory over the Cardinals.

The Highlanders have some heavy competition in Division I, primarily in the form of No. 3 Detroit Catholic Central which beat Howell, 4-3, way back in the season opener on November 13. Howell is undefeated since then, rolling off 26 straight wins and setting up a tantalizing rematch with the Shamrocks in Saturday’s quarterfinal.

Detroit Catholic Central only has one loss of its own in a 25-1-1 campaign in which the only blemishes are an early-season 3-2 loss to Hartland on November 19 and a 0-0 deadlock with the Byron Center Bulldogs on December 20 in the East vs. West Showcase at Michigan State University.

DIVISION 2

Powers Catholic isn’t ranked nearly as high as the frontrunners in Division 1 and Division 3, but in a bracket with no other high-ranked squads, the Chargers remain the favorites. The five losses on their 24-5-0 ledger are basically a “who’s who?” of Michigan boys hockey this season, including Hartland (3-2, November 15), Howell (4-2, January 3), St. Mary’s Prep (7-2, January 17), and Detroit Catholic Central (6-3, February 7).

In fact, the Chargers’ only loss to a lower-ranked opponent to date is a 5-3 setback on December 18 to the No. 71 University Liggett [Grosse Pointe Woods] Knights (24-5-0), who are still alive in the Division 3 bracket.

DIVISION 3

With two national Top 10 programs in the field, Michigan’s Division 3 playoffs are as competitive as just about any league in the country. No. 8 Houghton (22-6-1) and No. 10 St. Mary’s Prep (22-4-0) are the favorites, and being on opposite sides of the bracket, they could face each other in the championship game next Saturday.
