Colorado Avalanche fans will likely be confused that Nathan MacKinnon isn’t playing Wednesday night while other Olympians take the ice.

It’s not an exact science, though. Yes, it’s true that MacKinnon is out Wednesday as the Avalanche make their return to NHL action after the Olympic break.

It doesn’t mean that anything is wrong with him or that he’s doing anything wrong.

Why isn’t Nathan MacKinnon playing tonight?

Nathan MacKinnon isn’t playing Wednesday night simply to rest.

The Avalanche decided that their superstar center could use an additional night off rather than rushing right back into action.

MacKinnon and Canada lost on Sunday to the United States in the gold medal game.

Sure, MacKinnon had Avalanche teammates in that game who are playing on Wednesday, but each workload and expectation isn’t created equally.

It’s fair that MacKinnon is taking an extra day.

He’ll be back on the ice to dominate for Colorado soon enough.
