For years after Drew Brees retired, the New Orleans Saints struggled to find a new quarterback. Derek Carr didn’t work out, and the Saints were back to square one.
However, Tyler Shough, their 2025 second-round pick, looks to be the QB the Saints have been looking for. He showed a lot of promise and will be the starter in 2026.
But with Shough taking over, the Saints now have an interesting decision with Spencer Rattler. According to ESPN, not only is Rattler a good trade target, but his “Predicted chances of getting traded” this offseason are a significant 70%.
Saints get 70% trade prediction on Spencer Rattler
Trading Rattler, who is under contract for two more years on his rookie deal, would be a smart move for a team needing a solid backup quarterback.
While Kyler Murray, Tua Tagovailoa, and Malik Willis have drawn a lot of attention as top QB options, Rattler might be the most intriguing quarterback to add this offseason.
As ESPN’s Ben Solak writes, “The Saints don’t want to trade a young quarterback on a rookie contract who improved as a sophomore, but teams need developmental passers, and Rattler is the best candidate this spring.”
Rattler is only 25 years old, has two more years of control at under $3 million total, and is coming off a solid year for the Saints. In eight starts, Rattler had a 67.7% completion rate with 1,586 passing yards, eight touchdowns, and five interceptions.

While he’s not much of a runner, he did add 167 yards on the ground on 31 attempts, showing that, if needed, he can run the ball.
The 150th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft might not be the most eye-catching name this offseason, but he’s a young QB who showed development and is on a very cheap deal.
Whether it’s a team with little cap space like the Miami Dolphins, or a team like the Los Angeles Rams who could use a young QB to develop behind Matthew Stafford, there will be suitors for Rattler this offseason.
ESPN predicts Rattler to have a 70% chance of being traded this offseason, which is one of the highest predictions of the top trade candidates. Saints fans should keep an eye out for Rattler trade rumors, as their backup QB is a very likely trade candidate this offseason.
