Darryn Peterson finally addressed the criticism surrounding his sporadic availability, acknowledging the frustration while insisting his commitment to Kansas has never wavered.
The saga intensified nine days after the Jayhawks’ statement win over Arizona when Peterson benched himself in the second half of a victory at Oklahoma State, playing just 18 minutes. It was his shortest outing of the season.
The move ignited a wave of national criticism, including remarks from Stephen A. Smith discouraging NBA teams from selecting the projected No. 1 pick in the upcoming draft.
Two days after missing Kansas’ biggest win of the season, Peterson arrived at Allen Fieldhouse with his usual calm demeanor.
“On the court, no, I probably don’t smile,” Peterson told ESPN in an interview. “I think I smile a good amount off the court.”
Peterson admitted the season has not unfolded as planned.
“Everybody’s got an opinion on it,” he said. “But basketball is my life. If I could have been out there every game this year, I would have.”
Kansas has struggled to establish any type of rhythm amid the uncertainty of Peterson’s availability. The Jayhawks scored 82 points without him against Arizona but managed just 68 in a home loss to Cincinnati despite Peterson playing 32 minutes.

Jayhawks coach Bill Self has maintained that the roller coaster ride is worth it, calling Peterson “the best player” he’s had. Statistically, Peterson’s usage rate rivals that of Stephen Curry, and he’s shooting 43.1% from 3-point range.
With March days away, Kansas still is searching for consistency in the midst of a Big 12 title run and tournament bid.
