Eileen Gu left herself with work to do after an aborted first run in the women’s halfpipe finals at the 2026 Winter Olympics.
Gu medaled in her first two events, taking a pair of silvers, and Sunday’s rescheduled final was her final chance to leave Italy with gold. A snowstorm at the Livigno Snow Park caused the event — originally scheduled for Saturday — to be delayed until 4:40 a.m. ET on Sunday.
After winning gold in the women’s halfpipe in Beijing four years ago, Gu has the chance to go back-to-back and put the disappointment of her big air silver medal behind her.

She will have to do so from behind, after pulling out of her opening run due to an unclean landing to her first trick. Gu skied through to the end of the course to score 30. First-place qualifier Zoe Atkin of Great Britain led after round one with a score of 90.5.

Updates will begin ahead of Gu’s runs at the women’s halfpipe finals.
5:21 a.m: Amy Fraser of Canada, currently placed second, goes again. Back-to-back nines to finish. Another nice run, but can it challenge Atkin at the top of the board… no. No improvement on her 85 from run one.
5:10 a.m: Run two. Kate Gray first up once more. and she’s down! Lost her speed and was unable to land a trick. It’s a DNF. One more run for her to salvage something.
5:02 a.m: Here’s Great Britain’s Zoe Atkin, who has been going blow for blow with Gu all season and was the first-placed qualifier for the final. Oh, that’s a very nice, clean run. Not huge on technical difficulty, but Atkin has put a marker down here. 90.5 for Atkin, who goes into gold medal position.
4:55 a.m: Right, here’s Gu. Oh my….. starts with a huge first trick but doesn’t land it smoothly and skis forlornly to the end of the run. She scores 30. Yikes.
4:50 a.m: Svea Irving of the US has fallen on her first run coming out of an alleyoop and is the second skier to hit the deck in this rescheduled final. Conditions might be tricky throughout.
4:45 a.m: We’re underway. American Kate Gray with the first run of the final. A scratch run, scoring 44.50 having missed her last trick. If she lands that, her score will pick up massively. The first of four Chinese skiers, Liu Yishan, who got 70 on the board.
2:40 p.m.: Saturday’s women’s halfpipe event, featuring American-born Chinese skier Eileen Gu, has been rescheduled for Sunday, February 22, at 10:40 a.m. local time (4:40 a.m. ET) due to unsafe conditions following a snowstorm. Gu is the defending gold medalist and qualified for the final in 5th place.
How many medals has Eileen Gu won?
Gu arrived in Milan with three Olympic medals, including two gold medals, already under her belt, and she had added to that total with two silver medals in 2026.
Gold has eluded her to this point in Milan, but Gu has a chance to leave Milan with one gold medal if she can go back-to-back in the halfpipe and win on Saturday.
