It’s only the first weekend of spring training, but Yankees vs. Mets gets the juices flowing regardless of where it falls on the calendar.
The New York rivals square off Sunday in Tampa, still knocking off a bit of rust as they ease into their Grapefruit League schedules.
The Yankees opened their home slate at Steinbrenner Field on Saturday with a rout of the Tigers sparked by a pair of Aaron Judge home runs. While the captain might not quite be in midseason form, he obviously feels good as he prepares for meaningful games earlier than normal with the World Baseball Classic looming in early March.
The Mets, on the other hand, got virtually no offense in their spring opener Saturday against the Marlins. One of their many newcomers, former Dodgers catcher Austin Barnes, got the lone hit for a Mets starter in a lineup that included Bo Bichette, Marcus Semien and Juan Soto, among others.
Sunday will see Luis Gil get the ball for the Yankees and Justin Hagenman for the Mets, with multiple pitchers to follow on each side.
