The Philadelphia Phillies are basically running back the same team as last year for the 2026 season, although they are missing a couple superstars after losing one to free agency, and whiffing on signing another. Plus, their team is on the older side, with some superstars like Zack Wheeler starting the year injured.
They need to find replacements, and they need to get younger. Fansided’s Christopher Kline proposes that the Phillies do that by making a deal with the New York Yankees, and get their former ROTY candidate in Jasson Dominguez, and former ROTY Luis Gil.
The trade would look like this:
Phillies get: OF Jasson Dominguez, RHP Luis Gil
Yankees get: Edmundo Sosa, RHP Orion Kerkering
“This would be a fairly bold gamble for Philadelphia, but for a team in desperate need of more slugging behind Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber, there’s appeal to the idea of letting Domínguez test his skills in a new environment. He could start day one in left field, bumping Justin Crawford back down to Triple-A. Or the Phillies could plant Domínguez in Lehigh Valley for a year, with hopes of promoting him as Adolis García’s successor in a year. Luis Gil comes with his own share of issues, but he has two solid seasons under his belt (including an AL Rookie of the Year win in 2024) and he’d function as an important depth piece while Zack Wheeler recovers from shoulder surgery. The hope would be that Gil can develop into a regular No. 5 starter or swingman type over the next few years, but his stuff could perk up a bit in a bullpen role, if it comes to that” Kline wrote.
This past season, Dominguez slashed .257/.,331/.388/.719 with 18 doubles, 10 home runs, and 47 RBI in 123 games. As for Gil, he’s coming off a year where he only pitched in 11 games, but posted a 4-1 record, a 3.32 ERA, 41 Ks, and a WHIP of 1.404 over 57 innings pitched.
Both of these guys could pan out to be great additions for the Phillies, and help them get younger in the process. Hopefully, Philly gets on the phone soon, so they can have these guys on their roster before the end of Spring Training.
