Both the United States and Canada remain at the top of women’s hockey, and now they’ll face off for gold.

In their first clash at the Winter Games, the United States women’s hockey team delivered a dominant performance in arguably one of the most storied rivalries in sports, defeating Canada 5-0 and securing the top spot in Group A.

However, the Canadians were without their captain, Marie-Philip Poulin. She did not play in Team Canada’s preliminary-round game against the United States after being sidelined with a lower-body injury sustained in a match against Czechia.

By the time the final horn sounded, the U.S. had not only secured a crucial shutout but also the top seed in the knockout bracket.

The rivalry between the USA and Canada is regarded as one of the most intense in Olympic history, fueled by their longstanding dominance, multiple gold-medal encounters, and their fierce competition, especially in ice hockey.

Although the USA women’s team has performed sensationally, hockey holds a central place in Canadian national identity. A loss to the U.S. is often seen as a significant setback, regardless of the Americans’ talent level.

The Sporting News follows all the action in the storied rivalry where the United States battles Canada for gold.
