When Jalen Brunson signed his last extension with the New York Knicks – a four-year, $156.5 million deal inked in 2024  – he technically sacrificed financially.

If he had waited another year, Brunson could have signed a five-year maximum deal worth up to $269 million deal. By signing the deal that he did, Brunson afforded the Knicks additional salary cap space to build the team around him.

Jalen Brunson hopes Knicks ‘do right’ by him on next contract

When the time comes for him to sign his next extension with the Knicks, Brunson is looking for the organization to return the favor.

“A lot of people say I sacrificed for the team. One hundred percent I sacrificed for the team. But most importantly, I made sure my family and I are taken care of,” Brunson said in an interview with Vanity Fair

“Obviously we’d love for them to do right by me. I think anyone would. I feel like I sacrificed.”

To borrow a phrase from Isaiah Thomas, Brunson clearly wants the Knicks to “bring the Brinks truck,” and he’s letting his hopes be known well ahead of time.

But, a new contract for the star guard isn’t something that the Knicks have to worry about immediately. Brunson still has three years remaining on his current contract, which includes a player option for the 2028-29 season.

Brunson, 29, will be eligible for an extension following the ’27-28 season, and it could be an enormous one totaling over $400 million for five years, per Sports Illustrated

Now, will the Knicks actually offer him that much? That remains to be seen. A lot can change in the NBA in two years, but Brunson made his desire loud and clear.
