While the New York Mets have taken strides in rebuilding their team after losing key superstars, they still haven’t addressed a couple issues. One of those issues is that while they’ve replaced the offense of Pete Alonso, they haven’t replaced his power.

Luckily, a star New York’s been linked to in the past could fit the bill. Fansided’s Mark Powell and Wynston Wilcox believe the Mets should make a deal with the Minnesota Twins for their two-time All-Star Byron Buxton. Buxton is a destroyer of baseballs, and anchors the final spot in their outfield with a Platinum Glove.

“What do the Minnesota Twins actually gain from keeping Byron Buxton at this point? That’s the biggest reason the Twins would trade him…Much like the Phillies, adding as much firepower into the batting order is necessary. The Mets had a disappointing 2025 season, fell short of the MLB postseason and now have to figure out how to contend in 2026. The Mets added Juan Soto last offseason as their big addition and now they need to replace Pete Alonso’s bat. Buxton seems like the perfect option,” Powell and Wilcox wrote.

This past season, Buxton slashed .264/.327/.551/.878 with 21 doubles, 35 home runs, and 83 RBI in 126 games played. He’s a perfect replacement for Alonso’s power, and his defense is a major upgrade.

Buxton’s also only set to make around $45 million over the final three years of his contract, and for the big-spending Mets, that could be very attractive.

Hopefully, the Mets start negotiations as soon as they can; otherwise, another contender could swoop in and trade for him right under their noses.
