Jordan Stolz already rewrote the Olympic history books twice in Milan in men’s speedskating, and the U.S. now has a shot for more.
By sweeping the 500m and 1,000m events in record-breaking fashion, the 21-year-old phenom became the first male skater since the legendary Eric Heiden in 1980 to claim both sprint titles at a single Winter Games. His back-to-back golds didn’t just signal a changing of the guard; they established Stolz as the fighter jet of the ice, leaving the world’s best sprinters battling for silver in his wake.
While Stolz didn’t compete in Tuesday’s semifinals for the men’s team pursuit event, as Casey Dawson, Emery Lehman and Ethan Cepuran took that responsibility, the U.S. will still have a shot at another gold medal after dominating China in the semifinals. Can the Americans bring home another speedskating medal?

How does speed skating team pursuit work?
In the Olympic team pursuit, two teams of three skaters start simultaneously on opposite sides of the oval. The skaters race in a single-file line, utilizing drafting to conserve energy; the lead skater handles the wind resistance while the teammates follow closely behind to stay fresh. At various points, the leader will peel off to the back of the line, allowing a teammate to take the “pull” and maintain the high pace.
The clock doesn’t stop when the first person crosses the finish line, but rather when the third and final skater of the team completes the distance (6 laps for women, 8 laps for men). This makes cohesion vital — if one skater falls behind, the entire team’s time suffers. Teams must balance raw speed with tactical pacing to ensure all three members finish as a tight unit.
The competition follows a tournament format, beginning with quarterfinals or “seeding rounds” based on time, followed by head-to-head knockout rounds (semifinals and finals). Because the teams are on the track at the same time, the race becomes a visual game of cat-and-mouse as they track each other’s progress from across the oval.
