In Team Switzerland’s opening game of the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics, Timo Meier of the New Jersey Devils scored twice in the final frame against France.

The Feb. 12 game concluded with a 4-0 victory for the Swiss, earning them three points in Group A. Meier is joined by fellow New Jersey teammates, captain Nico Hischier and Jonas Siegenthaler on the Switzerland roster. The Swiss earned a very early multigoal lead after Damien Riat scored 55 seconds into the game and was followed by J.J. Moser scoring three minutes in,

Meier’s goals made him become the very first Swiss born NHL player to score two or more goals in an Olympic game.

Switzerland next transitions to play against Olympic favorite Canada on Feb. 13 — the Canadians most recently took down Czechia 5-0.

Timo Meier Shines in Switzerland 2026 Olympic Opener

Meier has 463 points across 231 goals and 232 assists in the league. For the Devils, the right wing has scored 28 points throughout the 2025-26 season.

He was traded to New Jersey by the San Jose Sharks in 2023.

Meier signed an eight-year, $70.4 million contract with the Devils in June of 2023. This marks his first Olympics for the Herisau native. He previously won silver with the Swiss at the 2018 and 2025 World Championship tournaments.

Goaltender  Leonardo Genoni stopped all 27 shots he faced in the net for the Swiss. Switzerland outshot France 43-27.

Team USA opens play in its first game in Italy, also on Feb. 12, against Latvia.
