Syracuse basketball is facing intensifying scrutiny after outgoing athletic director John Wildhack delivered blunt remarks about the future of the program, igniting more heat from a frustrated fan base.
Wildhack, who is set to retire July 1, confirmed he will make the final recommendation on head coach Adrian Autry despite his departure. His comments came as Syracuse continues to struggle through a disappointing season.
“I’m not going to get into hypotheticals,” Wildhack said when asked about Autry’s status. “We have a month left in the basketball season. … I’m not going to do anything until I see the results of this season.”

Wildhack added that he “owes it to Adrian” to let the season play out, reiterating that expectations of playing “meaningful games in March” remain intact. But for many Orange supporters, that standard appears increasingly out of reach.

Syracuse is 14-11 overall and 5-7 in ACC play, sitting well outside NCAA Tournament consideration. The Orange are just 47-42 in Autry’s two-plus seasons, marking the program’s longest sustained downturn since a five-year drought from 1967-72 when the NCAA Tournament field included fewer than 30 teams.
Wildhack acknowledged the “margin for error is incredibly thin” but stopped short of signaling a change.
With March approaching and little momentum building, Syracuse basketball finds itself at a crossroads and Wildhack’s final decision could define the next era of the program.
