Pat Spencer shared what felt a lot like a goodbye after the Golden State Warriors‘ game on Thursday night.
The former lacrosse star was on the Warriors’ active roster for the 50th time this season. On his two-way contract, that’s the limit.
That means unless the Warriors sign Spencer to an active-roster deal, he can’t play in the NBA for the rest of the year and would be limited to G League action.
“Business is business,” Spencer told reporters Thursday night. “But I’m beyond thankful for this organization and what we’ve been able to do together. I’m thankful they’ve given me an opportunity.”

Warriors fans are all over social media with a simple refrain: “Sign him!”
It seems likely that at some point, Golden State will do that. Spencer is a reliable bench player for the Warriors who doesn’t get a ton of minutes be seems to be trust by Steve Kerr.
Just his story to get here is crazy. He was the best player in college lacrosse at Loyola Maryland, then chose to use his final year of college eligibility to play basketball at Northwestern.
He went undrafted, then got into the G League and impressed enough to get NBA chances.

Spencer’s basketball journey was against the odds, and yet he’s made an impact on one of this era’s top teams by doing whatever Steve Kerr, Steph Curry and company need him to do.
Now, Spencer isn’t sure what his next basketball step will be.
All he knows for sure is that he’s grateful for the opportunity he’s already been given.
