The Boston Red Sox are having a solid offseason, adding a lot of talent to the pitching staff and improving their first base spot in a major way.
While they’re looking to acquire another infielder, ideally at second base, the Red Sox haven’t been able to find such a player yet. But that doesn’t mean they aren’t making moves.
As the Red Sox announced on Wednesday afternoon, they claimed catcher/infielder Mickey Gasper, formerly with the Minnesota Twins and the New York Yankees, to bring him back to Boston after a year away from the team in 2025.
Red Sox claim INF/C Mickey Gasper from Nationals
“The Red Sox today claimed C/INF Mickey Gasper off waivers from the Washington Nationals,” the Red Sox announced. “Boston’s 40-man roster is now at 39.”
Gasper played most recently with the Twins in 2025, playing in 45 games, recording a .158 batting average with a .489 OPS across 95 at-bats.
He was with the Red Sox in 2024, appearing in 13 games, getting 18 at-bats, and hitting .000 with a .217 OPS. He’s not the best hitter, but he is some experienced catcher/infield depth for the Red Sox.

This offseason, the Twins released him, letting the Washington Nationals pick him up off waivers. Then, a little over a week later, the Nationals cut Gasper.
Now, Gasper is back with the Red Sox after being away from the team for a year. But, before ever making his MLB debut, Gasper was in the Yankees organization.
He signed in 2018, and in December of 2023, was acquired by the Worcester Red Sox. He made the Majors a year later in 2024 and has since bounced around the league.
Gasper is back in Boston and could factor into the team’s depth at catcher and in the infield during Spring Training.
