The Cleveland Browns‘ head coaching search hasn’t been the smooth-sailing search that other teams have had in recent years. Multiple top candidates backed out, including for lesser jobs.

But, they finally landed on a coach in former Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken. It’s a good hire for the offense, but there are some major negatives for the defensive side of the ball.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pellisero, in the wake of the Browns’ hiring Monken, defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz was “upset” with the choice, and is telling the Browns he isn’t going to be their DC going forward.

DC Jim Schwartz not planning to stay with Browns after Todd Monken hiring

“After the Browns informed DC Jim Schwartz this morning they were passing him over to hire Todd Monken as head coach, Schwartz was visibly upset, said goodbyes in the building and told other coaches he’s not coming back. sources tell The Insiders,” Pelissero reports.

This is very significant news, as the Browns’ defense, one of the best in recent years, is going to need a new playcaller with Schwartz planning to leave the team in the wake of Monken’s hiring.

Schwartz has helped lead one of the best defenses in the NFL, and this new report suggesting his time in Cleveland is coming to an end is major news.

There will be plenty of teams planning to go after Schwartz as their new defensive coordinator, and while Schwartz is likely open to such a role, he doesn’t want to stay in Cleveland.

Getting passed up on for the head coaching gig by an outsider didn’t sit well with Schwartz, and he’s planning to leave the team in the wake of such a decision from the Browns.

He is still under contract, and the Browns want to bring him back. But with the former Super Bowl champion missing out on the HC job in Cleveland, his time with the team is coming to an end.
