The Detroit Lions have added a quality hire to Dan Campbell’s offensive coaching staff.
Mike Kafka has been hired by the Lions, according to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini.
Kafka most recently was the interim head coach of the New York Giants. He was part of the Giants’ interview process this offseason before they hired John Harbaugh.
He also was looked into as a possibility for the Eagles‘ opening at offensive coordinator.
Kafka concludes his search by joining the Lions.

His most notable work in the NFL was with the Kansas City Chiefs from 2017-21.
He joined Andy Reid’s staff as an offensive quality control coach for a season. He then spent two seasons just as the quarterbacks coach, and then two more as the QBs coach and the passing game coordinator.
Kafka then went to be the Giants’ offensive coordinator from 2022 until his promotion to interim head coach.
He’s known to have had a quality relationship with superstar QB Patrick Mahomes in Kansas City. He also won a Super Bowl ring while on the Chiefs’ staff.

Kafka was mostly a backup QB during his NFL playing career, which included contract stints with the Eagles, Patriots, Jaguars, Buccaneers, Vikings, Titans and Bengals.
Kafka was a college star at Northwestern and a fourth-round pick in the 2010 NFL Draft by the Eagles.
He’ll certainly bring plenty of knowledge and experience to the Lions.
