Malik Willis has been an incredibly reliable backup quarterback for the Green Bay Packers.

Whenever Jordan Love has been forced to miss time with injury in the past two seasons, Willis has stepped in seamlessly.

Going forward, though, the Packers might have to find someone else as their QB2.

Willis is a pending free agent, and it’ll be tough for Green Bay to keep him.

Mark Oldacres of Packers Wire summed it up like this in a new article:

“He has firmly priced himself out of being Green Bay’s backup.”

That’s not ideal, but it’s probably true.

“Willis capitalized on his opportunities to play meaningful snaps in Green Bay over the last two seasons and has set himself up for a nice contract once the free agency period opens, as well as a chance to at least compete to start for a team in 2026,” Oldacres writes. “Aaron Rodgers had the cheapest AAV for a non-rookie starting quarterback this past season at $13.65 million, with Daniel Jones just above him at $14 million, then a decent gap to Justin Fields at $20 million.”

The only way the Packers could even possibly get Willis back is if no teams offer him a starting position or starting money and he opts to return on what would likely be a short-term deal to a place that’s familiar.

There’s no guarantee that would work out in the long run, though.

Willis is good enough to at least compete for a starting job somewhere over the summer. He’ll probably get decent money, at minimum, to do just that.

Green Bay will have to solve its backup QB role while likely bidding farewell to Willis.
