The Tennessee Volunteers are sitting at 7-3 with very slim chances of making it to the College Football Playoffs. However, it was a better year than most expected, given the circumstances surrounding Nico Iamaleava’s departure. Now, it is Boo Carter who is leaving the team while the season is still ongoing.

“I’d like to take this opportunity to thank The University of Tennessee Coaches, administrators and fans for a wonderful 2 years. Unfortunately my season has been cut short due to injury. I have decided to enter the transfer portal and I am excited about the opportunities going forward,” Carter announced.

Carter had quite the summer before fall camp got underway. He decided to put himself over the team and skip out on some team activities. This didn’t leave a good impression with anyone, as he just assumed he wouldn’t be expected to show up.

“Tennessee sophomore defensive back Boo Carter is expected to be one of the Volunteers’ best players in 2025 on defense, offense and special teams, but his status with the team is unclear as we inch closer to August. Carter has missed ‘numerous’ team activities and was even confronted by team leaders because of his absences, according to the Knoxville News Sentinel,” CBS Sports’ Jordan Dajani reported.

Still, head coach Josh Heupel decided to keep him on the roster as long as he went through all of his repercussions. Now that he is transferring, it has been revealed that most people didn’t want him back.

“Now a done deal. Carter is no longer with the program. Was an odd situation going back to offseason workouts when he went AWOL. Lot of the team leaders didn’t want him back to start with and then he played sporadically,” On3’s Chris Low wrote.

If this is the case, it is interesting that Heupel brought him back. It could also indicate that there has been some tension between the team leaders who didn’t want him back and Heupel.

At the end of the day, the choice has been made and it is over. If this had been Carter last year, losing him would have been a huge blow, but after all he showed this season, it is best to finally let him go. Some were wishing he had been let go a while ago, though.
