Arizona Wildcats vs Colorado Buffaloes Game Preview

This Big 12-week 10 matchup is likely a ‘must win’ for both programs. Neither team is having the season they expected to have 3 months ago. The factors that both teams expected to lean on have been less than expected.

For Arizona, a win today means they are only one win away from bowl eligibility and a lot of Big 12 standings ground to cover if they want more than ‘bowl eligible’. With all of their remaining games coming against Big 12 opponents, all of which are ranked higher than Arizona, they could make up some ground with wins after today.

Colorado’s situation is slightly grimmer. The quarterback position believed to be a strength has been inconsistent at best. The running game that they were expected to prioritize under new running backs coach Marshall Faulk, still falls short of the expectation. Of their top 5 running backs, only two have totals over 200 yards and neither is over 300. Which is curious considering CU’s offensive line consistently ranks among the best in the Big 12.

The receivers who have always been a strength under Coach Prime have been alright, but not as good as in the previous two seasons. Even if you remove Travis Hunter from the equation. Omarion Miller, Joseph Williams and Sincere Brown lead the way as expected, but neither is on pace for 1,000 yards or better.

As for the other side of the ball, there isn’t great news for either team. Both teams have underachieved for different reasons. Even before the lopsided loss to Utah, the defense has struggled to affect multiple games this season. Arizona is 17th in total defense and Colorado doesn’t register in the top 50.  Neither team ranks in the top 50 for most offensive categories.

This game could come down to which quarterback plays better vs which defense is able to limit the opposing offense, specifically in regards to bigger chunk plays.
