The Miami Dolphins are making what could be the first of many major changes moving forward.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Dolphins and general manager Chris Grier have mutually agreed to part ways.
“ESPN Sources: Miami Dolphins and general manager Chris Grier met this morning and mutually agreed to part ways. Grier has been with the Dolphins since 2000, and has served as their general manager since 2016,” Schefter reported.
Schefter goes on to add that senior personnel executive Champ Kelly will take over as the team’s interim general manager.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports that no coaching staff changes are expected as of right now, so it appears head coach Mike McDaniel isn’t getting the boot.
“No other changes to the coaching staff as of now. Champ Kelly, who ran the Raiders most recently, is the new interim GM,” Rapoport wrote.
Grier began his Dolphins tenure as a scout in 2000. He was bumped up to assistant director of college scouting in 2003 and then director of college scouting in 2007.
Since he took over as general manager in 2016, the Dolphins have been to the playoffs three times but have never won a postseason game.
Follow two straight playoff appearances in 2022 and 2023 and an 11-win season in the latter year, things have gone off the rails for Miami, with the team posting an 8-9 season in 2024 before getting off to a 2-7 start this season.
But the poor record hasn’t been the only issue, as there has been no shortage of dysfunction in the locker room.
It’s clear to anyone with eyes that the Dolphins need a fresh start, so Grier simply had to go. McDaniel should be next.
