The San Francisco 49ers have lost one of their edge rushers.

According to The Athletic’s Joe Person, the Carolina Panthers are signing edge rusher Trevis Gipson off the 49ers’ practice squad.

“Panthers are signing OLB Trevis Gipson off 49ers’ practice squad, per league source,” Person reported on Tuesday afternoon.

Signed by the 49ers in August, Gipson failed to make the team’s 53-man roster out of training camp but was later brought back on the practice squad.

Since then, Gipson has appeared in four games but hasn’t posted a sack and only has two pressures in 80 defensive snaps. He has proven to be a plus in the run game, though, as evidenced by his 72.8 Pro Football Focus grade in that area.

While Gipson wasn’t any great shakes, the 49ers did need him thanks to injuries to Nick Bosa and Bryce Huff.

In fact, he was one of the team’s top-two edge rushers against the Houston Texans, so it’s surprising San Fran didn’t promote him to avoid having another team poach the veteran.

Over six seasons, Gipson has tallied 11 sacks, with his best season coming in 2021 when he posted seven. However, he was never able to recreate that success and has instead become an afterthought in recent years.

We’ll see if he can rebound in Carolina.
