The Los Angeles Lakers earned their first win of the season on Sunday night — and they did it without LeBron James and Luka Doncic. It was a huge victory for the team, as several players stepped up in their absence. However, two key contributors to the Lakers’ success suffered injuries during the game. Gabe Vincent was seen wearing a boot afterward, and Marcus Smart was also injured. Both missed the second night of the back-to-back.
“The Los Angeles Lakers injury list continues to grow as veteran guards Marcus Smart (right quad contusion) and Gabe Vincent (left ankle sprain) have both been ruled out of Monday night’s contest against the Portland Trail Blazers,” LakersNation.com’s Corey Hansford wrote.
Their absences created a significant hole in the roster for Monday night’s matchup, making it difficult for the Lakers to pull out another win. The team was also without backup center Jaxson Hayes, who is dealing with soreness.
“Hayes will end up sitting out both games of this back-to-back set, but he’s considered day-to-day with soreness. With Hayes out once again, the Lakers are likely to turn to Jarred Vanderbilt after his strong performance Sunday against the Kings,” CBS Sports wrote.
After the game, head coach JJ Redick provided a positive update on Smart and Hayes ahead of Wednesday’s matchup.
“JJ Redick says he is hopeful the Lakers will have Marcus Smart and Jaxson Hayes available on Wednesday in Minnesota,” Lakers insider Dave McMenamin wrote.
With the injury bug already hitting the Lakers early in the season, the team’s depth will be tested. The absence of multiple key players was noticeable on Monday night. Getting Hayes and Smart back would at least bring some much-needed stability.
The next two weeks will be crucial. There’s no guarantee that Luka Doncic or LeBron James will return when projected, making it even more important for the Lakers to get healthy and build momentum.
