The San Antonio Spurs are now enjoying a meteoric rise to commence this 2025-26 season, winning their first two games of the year in a promising fashion.
Although everything around the Spurs revolves around Victor Wembanyama, it would be unfair to disregard what the team’s young guard trio have strongly contributed to help the team’s positive start.
Stephon Castle is tearing it up as San Antonio’s floor general, averaging 19.0 points, 6.0 boards and 6.0 assists. His backcourt mate, Devin Vassell, is also outstanding as he is registering 18.0 points for the past two matches.
Meanwhile, Dylan Harper is showing off as a key reserve, as the reigning No. 2 overall pick has been the Spurs’ main weapon off the bench with 14.0 points per game to go with 4.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists.
With how great these three guards are playing for San Antonio, Paul Pierce boldly claimed that the Spurs must finally move on and trade De’Aaron Fox.

“I just like the young guys,” the Hall of Famer said on the Ticket And The Truth podcast. “I like the lineup of the guys that’s around the same age to grow together. Fox needs to be on a team that can contend right now. Not to say that San Antonio is not a contender, but I think he needs to be on a different type of team and let these young guys develop and grow.
“The young guys, I need them to develop. Fox is already an established All-Star in this league. He needs to go somewhere where he feels like he can win now and not try to outgrow this young squad.”
After eight seasons with the Sacramento Kings, Fox was notably acquired by San Antonio last 2024-25 midseason. The star point guard, who inked a $229 million max extension for four years with the Spurs back in August, won’t play at the start of this new season as he continues his rehabilitation from a hamstring injury.
Kevin Garnett dismissed Pierce’s hot take, noting that the 27-year-old is a vital playmaker, clutch scorer and veteran for the Spurs: “I’ll just slide him in here. You got [Harper] coming in, and then you can play double point guard, bringing the ball up in this environment, which speeds up the pace. Wait ’til De’Aaron Fox gets back, because he makes shots in the fourth quarter.”
“I’d rather move him for some pieces,” Pierce responded, “A more athletic wing in there. Get another athletic wing, I don’t need all these guards.”
Should the three talented guards of the Spurs continue their impressive showings, Fox’s situation and looming on-court play after injury recovery would truly be worth monitoring. Right now, San Antonio has nothing to worry about in that scenario, as the entire group is balling out for ideal early-season momentum.
