The highest echelon of women’s rugby union in England, the Premiership Women’s Rugby, is back for a new season this weekend – a season which is set to be incredibly exciting as it comes off the back of England hosting, and winning, the Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025.
What is the PWR?
The Premiership Women’s Rugby (PWR) is the top league of women’s rugby in the UK, and is regarded as some of the highest standard of domestic rugby worldwide. In the same set up as the men’s tournament (the Gallagher PREM) teams compete against each other in a round robin style of tournament across the season.
Come June, when the league reaches its climax, the total number of points – based off wins, bonus points and points differences – delineate which teams will face each other in the semi-finals and final.
Players from all over the world sign to the English domestic clubs for a chance to play in the PWR, which equips players with far more game time than any other national league.
What are the fixtures this weekend?
The opening match of the new PWR 2025/26 season will be on Friday, October 24, as Harlequins face the Loughborough Lightnings.
The next day, Trailfinders Women will battle the Exeter Chiefs, as Sale Sharks go up against the Leicester Tigers. Gloucester-Hartpury will face Saracens to finish off the inaugural weekend.
