The San Francisco Giants have gone all-in on Tony Vitello in what could become a historic move—if it actually comes to fruition. However, Vitello has reportedly had the offer since the weekend and has yet to accept it.

“Everything we hear is that he does want this. And the Giants are going to have to make it worth his while to leave Tennessee… The ball is in his court, this is the guy they’ve offered the job to,” The Athletic’s Andrew Baggarly said.

If Vitello accepts, he is poised to become one of the highest-paid managers in Major League Baseball. But his deep-rooted passion for Tennessee is making the decision especially difficult.

“I don’t think some understand how odd it is that Tony Vitello didn’t immediately accept an offer to become an MLB manager. For a college coach to even consider staying is testament to how torn he is about the decision. Giants are a good org with arguably the world’s best park,” WBIR’s Wes Rucker wrote.

On Tuesday, Vitello was seen at Tennessee’s open baseball scrimmage, where fans loudly urged him to stay. Observers noted that he appeared more tense than usual. A key factor potentially holding up the decision is the uncertainty surrounding job security in San Francisco.

“Latest update on Tony Vitello, which is understandable given the spot he’s currently in. He has long-term security. There’s a lot of risk in making a move where that security may not be as strong. The tenure of an MLB manager can often be a short one,” FanSided’s Jeff Young wrote.

And that’s the one thing the Giants can’t guarantee. The next few years are crucial for the franchise, and if they don’t win, Vitello could quickly find himself looking for a new opportunity.

If he chooses to remain at Tennessee, he’s likely to stay as head coach for the rest of his career. He delivered the school’s first-ever baseball national championship and is deeply loved in Knoxville—a level of adoration he may not immediately find in San Francisco.
